Marketing Tricks: Article No. 11
If you think that the surveys and opinion polls published in the press, “are the truth, the whole truth so help them God…”- stop right here and do not read any further. You surely have no need to learn about the PR techniques they’re masterfully using, which of course you could use yourself to improve your business or your image.
All right, I am a little feisty today. I just met an old acquaintance this morning and since I have known her, this lady is what I would call a professional victim. She knows what I do, she knows about NLP, she knows I do trainings and coaching, and she knows I am into getting results, and being positive. She knows me well for about ten years now.
But for her, everything is wrong with everybody, and the same things that were wrong 10 years ago are still wrong now – the same complaints and the same drama.
After about 15 minutes of letting her grumble vociferously I timidly and with half voice dared to ask her – would you like to solve these issues or do you just want to complain? Because you know I am teaching Time Line Therapy® and with this technique I think I can help you to feel a little better.
Solve the problem? I don’t care about that! – she said. There is nothing I need to do! But listen… and she proceeded to tell me everything again from the beginning…
The third time through, I apologized and left!
Pattern No. 11 – PUBLIC OPINION WITH A FORGONE CONCLUSION – you can distribute and circulate a large amount of surveys and opinion polls for the purpose of making a statistical analyses, but if the population selection used to test your hypotheses is biased there will be deceptive results and a false conclusion.
Let’s see some examples of how that would work.
In an NLP context this pattern could be something like this:
But of course!
If you’ve been in the military, you know that in many instances you’re trained to repeat the order to yourself. This in turn will show as the eyes moving in the Self Talk location instead of the other possibilities – visual, or auditory or kinesthetic.
Another example:
(Sample population was chosen from a group that supports and defends the traditional methods of psychotherapy for obvious reasons and refutes anything new coming on their turf).
So, a certain biased poll may be conducted to support a certain position in an attempt to influence others.
In conclusion, to learn this linguistic pattern, begin to notice opinion polls results. Do not just simply assume that the people are randomly selected, in different areas of town, or in different locations in your city, or state, or country. And in certain issues, all those conditions make a huge difference.
Next (and once you begin to spot it), chose a subject for survey (i.e. procrastination). Solicit responses to your question from at least 15 people of the same sex, approximate age and occupation as you. Make a chart with the results. Then ask at least 15 people of the opposite sex, age and different occupation as your own. Make a chart with the results.
Do you find differences between the two? Explain why.
Until then, be well.

Great I never thought it that way, I knew something was done to “alter” the results so that they would validate what ever results they wanted to “sell”
Thank you!
